Whitmer successfully defended its Three Rives Athletic Conference boy track and field title but it took a second-place finish in the 4 x 400 meter relay — the final event of the meet — to secure the win. The Panthers racked up 121 points during league championship meet that was held on May 15 and 17 at Central Catholic High School’s Gallagher Stadium in Toledo, Ohio.
Findlay placed second with 109 points followed by Fremont Ross (97.5 points) which nudged out St. John’s Jesuit (97 points) by a half point for third place. St. Francis de Sales finished in fifth place with 81 points followed by Central Catholic (67 points), Lima Senior (45 points), and Clay (43.5 points).
Senior Tyler Brown of Findlay won two field events and two running events to earn the both TRAC Track Athlete of the Year and Field Athlete of the Year accolades.
Brown defended his title in the 400 meter with a time of 49.29 but could not better his 48.78 performance from last year’s TRAC championships. However, he did set new meet records in the 200 meter (22.08), long jump (23-08.25), and high jump (6-08). The 200 was a new race for Brown that he decided to run at the last-minute before the event deadline.
Besides Brown’s three meet records seven additional records were established during the two-day meet.
Fremont Ross owned the speed relays. Seniors Jacob Luc, Drew Starks, and Dylan Starks formed the nucleus of the two relay teams and were joined by senior De Churchya for the 4 x 200 meter race (1:29.06) and sophomore Jeff Barnett for the 4 x 100 meter event (43.04).
Likewise, St. Francis dominated the distance races. Senior Kyle Lach ran the 1600 meters in 4:21.72 which was more than three seconds faster than is winning time from last year’s race. His teammate sophomore David St. John bettered the 3200 meter record by more than 16 seconds finishing in 9:31.93. Both runners joined with sophomore Jacob Baugh and senior Dan Lenart to win the 4 x 800 meter relay which was run on the first day of the meet.
Central Catholic senior James Freeman crossed the finish line of the 100 meter dash in a record-setting time of 10.94.
Nick Holley nosed out his twin brother Nate to win the 300 meter hurdles with a new meet record of 39.94. Holley also defended his pole vault title.
Fremont Ross junior Jared Ballenger was a multiple event winner out-throwing the competition in the shot put (56-10.50) and discus (171-08).
Whitmer head coach Jeremy Elliott was named the TRAC Coach of the Year.
