Veteran Toledo Blade sports writer Steve Junga previews the upcoming TRAC boys varsity basketball season.
A poll of the Three Rivers Athletic Conference head coaches has Central Catholic tabbed as the preseason favorite to win this year’s league title followed by St. John’s Jesuit and Whitmer.
Last season Whitmer (24-3) captured the inaugural TRAC championship with a 12-2 conference record and made it all the way to the state Division I championship game where they fell to Pickerington Central 45-40.
Central Catholic defeated St. John’s on a buzzer-beater to capture second place in the conference with a 11-3 record (17-5 overall). St. John’s (15-7, 11-3 TRAC) finished third.
The rosters for each of these schools boasts marquee D-I collegiate recruits.
Nigel Hayes, a 6-7 senior forward for Whitmer, will be heading Madison, Wisconsin to play for the Badgers next year. St. John’s four-year starter 6-8 Marc Loving, will be playing for the Ohio State Buckeyes. And Deontae Cole, a 6-5 forward for Central Catholic, will be heading off to Northern Kentucky University while teammate senior 6-5 forward Keith Towbridge has elected to play football for Louisville.
Conference play begins on Decembe 7 but several games for Central Catholic and Whitmer had to be rescheduled to accomodate both school’s appearances in their respective divisional state championship football games.
